Darren Amena

Darren joined Huili School Hangzhou having previously worked in a large Primary School in Worcestershire, serving a richly diverse cohort under the inspiring leadership of Val Weddell Hall, OBE. Over the last two years, he has taught in Year 4 and Year 5, taken part in teacher flash mobs and YouTube videos for World Book Day and been interviewed on the radio with Pudsey Bear for Children in Need. Some of Darren’s highlights from this time are; engaging the parents in topic workshops, organizing a star gazing evening and working as head of the Charities Faculty raising money for local and national projects.

Darren trained as a primary school teacher after a 10 year career in retail management before realising his dream of becoming a teacher and graduating from The University of Worcester with First Class Honors. Whilst studying towards his teaching degree he spent 3 weeks volunteering as a teacher in Madagascar. He works every day to thread creative curricula throughout his lessons to ensure that children have clear links to tangible reasons for their studies. He believes that this themed approach has allowed him to put into practise all that he has learnt about different learning styles.

He is passionate about sport especially football and golf and enjoys passing on this love of sport through extra-curricular activities such as: Lacrosse, tag rugby, dodge ball, balon prisonnaire, tennis and football. He believes that it is extremely important for children to work at staying fit and healthy and supports the view ‘a healthy body leads to a healthy mind’.
